Of the remaining 80%, many—for various reasons—receive neither clicks nor impressions. In the industry, these items in the catalog are commonly known as «zombie products.» Based on the latest feed and campaign optimization strategies, we’ve put together this step-by-step guide to help you automatically identify and «revive» these products, ensuring that no item in our feed is left out simply for no reason. What Is a «Zombie Product»? A «Zombie Product» is generally defined as an item that, although approved and available in a CSS, has received 0 clicks over a period ranging from the last 30 to 90 days. These products aren’t suspended or pending review; they’re simply being “ignored” by the algorithm in favor of others that deliver better results for your campaign’s performance goals. Having a large number of inactive products in your data feed is not only a waste of potential but also dilutes the actual efficiency of your core campaigns. By isolating and activating these products, we ensure that your entire inventory has the opportunity to gain visibility—and even generate profitable sales—if given the initial push. A 3-step strategy: identify, tag, and activate Implementing this strategy in your accounts is quick and easy: 1. Identification The first step is to identify which products are underperforming. You can do this by downloading a report from Google Ads showing your items with 0 clicks in the last 30 days, or by using automated scripts that update this list daily—which is the solution we propose in this post. 2. Tagging Products Once the affected IDs have been identified, we need to tag them in a custom column so we can create a specific campaign for them. To do this, we’ll use a Google spreadsheet as a supplementary feed in Merchant Center (or the equivalent tool) and an empty custom label in our feed (for example, custom_label_0 = «low_clicks_last_30d» or simply «Low Volume»). 3. Activation with Performance Max (PMax) The final step is to create a campaign dedicated exclusively to these products, following these guidelines: Setup: Although not mandatory, we recommend a Performance Max campaign without budgets, targeting only the products we labeled earlier. Bidding Strategy: Set the strategy to «Maximize Conversions.» The goal of this campaign is visibility, not efficiency. We want to give the algorithm the freedom it needs to display these products and generate engagement. Budget: Your budget determines your commitment to these products. Think of it as a long-term investment to clean up your account. It depends on the number of products in your catalog and your investment capacity, but make sure it’s an amount the algorithm can work with… Once a «zombie» product starts receiving clicks (or even sales), it will no longer meet the «0 clicks» condition. At that point, it should automatically exit this campaign (if you’re using the script, of course) and return to your standard campaigns, where it will now compete based on efficiency metrics. How to optimize this strategy for better results Patience: This campaign is designed to run for one to four weeks with the same set of items. Its purpose is to «unlock» the potential of our entire catalog. Lifecycle: The script allows for minor configurations, such as applying it only to a specific set of campaigns, defining the click threshold beyond which a product is no longer considered a “zombie,” and so on. Exclusions: To follow best practices, you can exclude these low-volume products from your other campaigns using the same custom tag, ensuring there’s no cannibalization (though, to be honest, a “zombie” product can’t really cannibalize sales—but if we want to be thorough about this…). Final Checklist for Getting Started You can download the script to automate this strategy at the link below, and if you need help implementing it, feel free to contact us with no obligation. Don’t let your inventory gather digital dust.
