Instead, Google is offering us four metrics designed to provide managers with much more information and, in doing so, make our job easier when it comes to managing campaigns: But what do these metrics mean? Top of Page Impression Rate: This is the percentage of times the ad appears above organic search results and above competitors—that is, in the top position. Top of Page Impression Rate: This is the percentage of times the ad appears above organic search results. These two metrics help us determine how often our ad appears in the top position or above organic search results. The number of times an ad has appeared in the absolute top position relative to the number of times Google Ads estimates it could have appeared in that position. Top Impression Share Similar to the previous metric, but in this case it represents the ratio of the times our ad appeared at the very top compared to the times it could have appeared above organic search results. Until now, we were looking at Average Position to see where our ads were showing, but the truth is that the information we were seeing wasn’t entirely relevant. It doesn’t tell us the position where our ad appears on the search results page, but rather its position relative to the other ads competing for that keyword. What does this mean? That an average position of 1 may indicate that our ad is displayed above our competitors, but it could be appearing at the bottom of the page, below all the organic results. So, which metrics should we focus on? Like everything in life, it depends. For example, if we have a search network campaign where we bid on our brand or business name, we’ll likely always aim to appear in the top position above organic results and competitors. Until now, we looked at the average position and aimed for a value between 1 and 1.1, but this didn’t guarantee anything. In this case, we should look at the Top of Page Impression Share. We’ll know how often we appear in the top position and can increase our bid if we’re not meeting our goal. On the other hand, if we want to ensure we’re appearing at the top of the search results page, above organic results, we should look at the Top Impression Share. We’ll know the percentage of times we appear above the organic results. Conversely, by looking at the average position, we wouldn’t know if we were achieving our goal. As for the metrics “Top of Page Impression Share” and “Top Impression Share,” we need to keep in mind that these are estimates Google makes based on its algorithms; therefore, while we can consult this data, it isn’t entirely reliable. They take into account parameters such as targeting or the estimated traffic for a given keyword, but we don’t know for sure how they’re weighted to calculate the value. For this reason, we recommend focusing more on impression percentages than on impression shares. And what about Shopping? One of the problems with the average position was that we couldn’t see data for Shopping campaigns. In contrast, with these metrics, we can see in which positions our products are displayed. For example, if we have a product that we know has the best price, we might want to look for the Top Impression Percentage. We’ll know what percentage of impressions we appear first in, and we can get an idea of what position we’re achieving with our current bid. If for a product we have a Top 3 Impression Rate of 90% but a 101% Top 3 Impression Rate in the Absolute Top 3, we’ll know that our bid is higher than that of most advertisers, but there are one or two competitors who are bidding heavily on that product. For all these reasons, we believe that the removal of the average position metric is by no means a problem.
