This month, we began to see the first changes to Google Shopping following the European Commission’s ruling. How does Google Shopping work? For those who don’t know how Google’s advertising system works… The search engine conducts an auction in hundredths of a second when a user performs a search to determine, on the one hand, the position of the ads (the higher and/or further to the left they are, the greater the chance of clicks) and, on the other hand, the actual cost-per-click price (you only pay when someone clicks on the ad and traffic is redirected to the client’s website). Google Shopping, Following the European Commission’s Fine Last June, the European Commission imposed a fine of 2.4 billion euros (2.879 million $) for abuse of a dominant position in its Google Shopping service. These are the product ads that appear alongside the merchant’s name and price. Although Google has appealed the fine, it has simultaneously proposed a plan to offer its competitors the opportunity to place their clients“ ads through an auction system. The American multinational made a similar proposal three years ago in an attempt to resolve the case. That proposal, however, reserved the top two ad spots for itself—a condition the European Commission rejected. Now, Google has proposed that any competitor be allowed to appear in all ad spaces. But there’s a catch! It would set a minimum price. It appears that, as of yesterday (9/18/17), Google is making changes aimed at sharing these ad spaces, with the caption ”by Google,” in order to distinguish the provider of the advertising platform. We’ll be keeping an eye out for the—highly likely—changes to Google Shopping ads that will take place before the end of the month. Had you noticed this? How do you think the European Commission’s requirements might affect things in the future? Go ahead!
